One New Zealander in World Deaf Golf Championship
Thursday, 02 September 2010

susan-with-medal.jpg
8th World Deaf Golf Championship, Fairmont

I flew out with Ben Clifford on 4th August for Edinburgh; it was very long trip – about 30 hours.

I have a couple of day break to recover from jet-lag then moved onto St Andrews, New Hall (University of St Andrews) where I stayed for a week.

Attend WDG AGM meeting in the morning then the opening ceremony where the 16 countries teams attending in late afternoon. We went for a Banquet Dinner and I sat with VIP group because I am only one from New Zealand.

Monday – practice round, get familiar with golf course. The course measurement is in yards instead of metre which I am struggling with.

1st round start at 6.30am, my turn to play was at 12.20pm and took 7 hours to complete! 2nd round at 12.40pm and took 5 hours – much better but still in 2nd place. 3rd round, pleased to get early started at 6.30am and still in 2nd place.

After 3rd round, my right knee started to swell and painful so went to St Andrews Community Hospital then onto Dundee Hospital for x-ray and didn’t get back to New Hall till 4.30am.

I was not sure that I can play in final round until about an hour before I due to play so I tried out few time and thought my knee swelling have gone down to enable me to move around a bit better so play on!

The first nine holes, had a bit of blow out and the next nine I worked hard to played better but too late to catch the leader. So finished tied for 2nd but lost the count back so finished 3rd. It was improvement over 4th place two years ago.

It was a great experience playing in such wonderful match in World Deaf Golf Championship. But my advice is better to have a team than go myself because of support each other.

I would like to thanks Auckland Deaf Society, Deaf Sports Federation of New Zealand, my Mother and friends for their supports of funding my trip. Without their help I wouldn’t have gone.
