Waikato vs. Auckland Competition

The Waikato 8 Ball team visited the new Auckland Deaf Society clubroom and this was their first visit since the building was redeveloped. Welcome to Jarrod Childs from Rotorua, who has joined the Waikato team. We played singles competition; Auckland got 13 points and beat Waikato’s 10 points.

After lunch, the Auckland mixed team; Rose Kerr, Steven Robson, Rosie Ryder and Stephen Sullivan played a Double’s competition. This was an exciting game to watch and almost a draw, luckily our team won and bet Waikato 7-6.

The overall points the winner went to Auckland team who scored 20 with Waikato scoring 16.Thank you all for your wonderful support and a big thank you to Michael Wi and Chris Raharuhi for their kind help with the BBQ and also a big thanks to Julie-Anne for working in the bar during the day.

After the competition we held a Ford vs Holden social night, and watched the Tri-Series rugby on the big screen. The All Black’s beat Australia 20-10. The rugby sweepstake, guessing the right score, was won by Daniel Harborne; $40 cash.

HELLO

I missed last month’s newsletter update you about our club, just shows how much we had going on and how the months have gone by so quickly. Our team has undertaken a lot of training and organising for World Deaf Squash Championship. Apologies for not updating you all last month.

July 24-25th, we went north to Whangarei for a weekend squash training camp. Thank you Angus McDonald for letting us stay at your place and organising hot coaches from Whangarei to work with us and polish up our team. We even had a Fitness Trainer to teach us about suitable food to eat and exercises the squash team need to include in training before the upcoming WDSC, OOPS!!!! We went home on Sunday with STIFF BUMS, ACHING BODIES! The weekend was a really good eye-opener for our team and showed us that we need further training to polish ourselves up.

Our fundraising has been going really well and thank you all for your support on 12th July; World Cup Soccer Final and the Hot Breakfast, (see last month ADS newsletter on page 24). We have now ordered our uniforms and can’t wait to see our – FLASH team! Accommodation fees are paid and all we need now is to fund raise a bit more to cover our travel expenses and a few bits and pieces. I would like to thank my team for all their hard work; sausage sizzles and other fundraising events. You have made it possible in the shortest time, 6 months since we established our new club. I am DEFINITELY proud of our new club and the members for the endless efforts to make this happening!

Our next canteen will be on 24th September at Deaf Club, please write this in your diary and VISIT us at the Deaf Club that night. I will arrange to have all the team on the stage wearing their uniforms, come and meet to the FAMOUS NZ TEAM, come and praise them and take photos of them and get their signatures LOL!

See the photos of our weekend in Whangarei!
