Understanding Deaf Culture

Auckland Deaf Society works hard to promote Awareness of Deaf Issues in the wider community.

Promoting and teaching NZSL is a significant part of this mission. We also work hard to connect Deaf people with the community, run social and cultural events, and help Deaf people receive the services they need.

Deaf culture has a unique history and can be misunderstood by the hearing community. The Deaf community primarily uses NZSL to communicate, connects through shared understanding and experiences, and sees Deafness as a cultural, rather than medical, definition.
